Searching for Yellow Perch!
Summer perch season on the waters of Lake Erie, Lake St Clair, Lake Michigan, Saginaw Bay and more are starting to fire up! We know many of you are on the hunt and searching for yellow perch! The focal point of this blog is to find the Lasagna and find PERCH!
These shots show schools of yellow perch on 2D Sonar. Take a look at these sonar shots from many different perch trips over the years. When searching for perch, look for small arches, dots and clutter tight to the bottom while on plane. Once you run over some that look promising, drop a waypoint on the fly. Turn back around, head back to the waypoint and scan over the area at a low idle speed. The goal is to set up on top of the school.
Once you see activity and set your spot lock or anchor, your hoping for "LASAGNA" under the boat! This can happen in seconds or sometimes takes awhile. It just depends how active the school is, etc. What we mean by lasagna is a continuous layer of fish that show up as a long solid mark.
We call a good school a single layer of lasagna, big school a double layer and anything beyond that is the mother-load. The bigger the school, the more the layers and constant full screen return you will have. Many days the schools will come and go and the screen will go from "loaded" to blank as the schools swim around.
To keep the school around for as long as possible, try to make sure there is at least one rod in the water at all times. If you have 4 anglers in the boat and nobody is on bottom for minutes, the school often gets uninterested and leaves, especially if you are near a pack of boats.
