5-12-23 Detroit River Fishing Report

Detroit River Walleye

Day 1 of a 3 day fishing bonanza was AWESOME! We fished Friday, Saturday and Sunday and it was awesome action each day. We rented a place on the water with a boat slip, so that made getting on the water quick and easy. Here is the report from the first day.

5/12/23 Report - Lower Detroit River

We rolled into town in the early afternoon and got on the water about 2pm. We jigged for walleye in 15-17' of water in the lower end of the river. The water temp had climbed from the previous week and we found 57 degrees on the main channel. This was a big jump from 48 degrees the week before. Between 3-4pm the bite was hot. The fish were going nuts. It didn't take long to get our limit of walleye. Slow controlled jig strokes about a foot off the bottom with a slight pause were best for triggering bites. A 3/4 oz purple jig with a Black n silver 4'' Split Tail Minnow did the most damage. Bleeding Blue N Silver also did well. Stinger hooks were a must as most of them were stinger hook only. We used our 2.5'' Stinger Hooks! We didn't chase any other fish afterwards as we just rolled into town and wanted to get back to the Airbnb and get settled in. We did catch quite a few gobies, one which was JET BLACK! It was wild looking! The water was very clean with 3-4' or greater visibility. We got rained on a few times but it was never very heavy, just a steady light rain. It was a fantastic day and made for some great memories.
